Paying staff who worked when daylight saving began or ended

Daylight saving starts from 2am on the last Sunday in September, and ends at 3am on the first Sunday in April each year.

The dates for daylight savings in 2024 are:

  • Sunday 7 April 3am - daylight saving ends and the clock moves back one hours, and
  • Sunday 29 September 2am - daylight saving starts and the clock moves forward one hour.

If you have staff working when daylight saving ends, you need to make sure they are paid for the extra hour worked.

If you have staff working when daylight saving starts, you need to make sure you pay them their normal hours even though they worked one hour less.

The New Zealand Government website states that:

If you are working when daylight saving begins and the clocks go forward, you actually work an hour less, but you are entitled to payment for your normal hours. For example if you were meant to work from midnight to 8am you will only work 7 hours, but you are entitled to be paid for 8 hours of work.

If you are working when daylight saving ends and clocks go back an hour you are entitled to any extra hours that you work. So if you were meant to be working from midnight to 8am but actually work 9 hours you will be paid for 9 hours of work.

Please note: Your Smartly website and app doesn't account for daylight saving changes. Timesheets are calculated on start time/end time. So if your staff are using timesheets, please adjust the staff's start time/end time to ensure they are paid the correct hours.
